More studio time

It was the semester’s first 11-hour day, and third after-hours night in a row. It did not have to be an 11-hour day. Someone scheduled a meeting and then stood me up, without so much as an apologetic email. I’ll try to not remind him of that with bad jokes the next time I run into him.

It was a studio night, the third night in a row for that, too. And, tonight, the sports gang was in to do two shows.

Those shows will be up tomorrow and Friday.

To hold you over, here are two shows the news team produced last night. (This should give you a reasonable sense of the production flow … )

I teased you with Olympic silver medalist Andrew Capobianco yesterday. Here he is now.

And here’s the news show. A nice installment for their first official show of the semester.

Seems late in the semester for firsts, but that’s just time playing tricks on me. We are, in fact, right on time. Remember, on-camera and off, from pre-production to editing, these are all student-produced shows. Young group, too, but full of ambition and energy and good spirit. Given how they’ve started, I suspect they’ll be making great progress in the next three or five weeks.

The daily duds: Pictures of clothes I put here to, hopefully, help avoid embarrassing scheme repeats.

Made those myself this summer. I made a lot of cufflinks this summer. You’ll see them here from time to time. Hopefully they won’t all be late nights.

Moving fast

Some days feel like they take forever. Others have the grace to seem to fly right by. And wouldn’t you like to have a few more of those in the middle of your week?

Today seemed to last about 45 minutes. People came into the studio to shoot a quick thing. It’s a blip for a commercial they’ll use at football games next fall. Took longer for everyone to get set up than for them to shoot the small portion they needed today.

We were simultaneously setting up some other big final project program. It went off without a hitch because smart people made it happen. I know, because I watched them do it.

And, after it was over, and after we tore it all down, it was almost time to call it a day. There was just enough time to sit down and catch your breath.

The anchors of Hoosier News Source are graduating seniors. They’ve been a part of this since their very first day on campus.

There’s still time to flunk them in some class or another, so they have to stick around.

These things come to mind from time-to-time, that’s all I’m saying.

The young woman on the left is also graduating. She’ll be working on air in Green Bay in a few weeks.

Green Bay, market number 67, is a second-job market, traditionally. We’ve put three graduates there fresh out of school in the last year. We’re cultivating a lot of talent around here. Don’t think we don’t brag about this sort of thing frequently.

And, tomorrow, we’ll shoot the last sports shows of the year.

There’s an animal video in here, and other good stuff

A morning shoot and auditions in the studio this morning. And a Zoom meeting and a phone meeting and a canceled project, too. It left me just enough time to take a walk in the sunshine.

I made a new friend.

They’ll come right up to you if you take a little interest in them. They are used to attention and always hungry. Clearly. Look at him. Hasn’t eaten in days, poor guy.

Also took a few photographs that’ll wind up on the site at some point next week. Here’s a teaser.

We also lined up a podcast for next week, and scheduled some other projects so it was a fair Friday. And now we can turn to the weekend. But first …

Two shows to watch right here, a sports highlight program with a brand new anchor making his debut. Nice guy, always smartly dressed, and he did a fine job here.

The talk show is all about soccer. So much soccer. So much good soccer. And good soccer talk, too.

We sat on the deck for a bit this evening, under blankets. For as mild and warm as we’ve had it the last few days, we get more clouds and more cold coming next week. So that’s something.

To put the sun at your back and the wind in your face

It was a lovely afternoon for a bike ride. I did not dawdle, and so we set out for an hour, with the slightest chill in the shade and the perfect amount of warmth in the sun.

It could be that the wind whisked it all away. Wind is the thing that demands the most of us. It’s a cycling thing — some 30 percent of your energy, says the almost-science/sorta-old-wives-tale, is devoted to overcoming wind resistance. It’s also a regional thing. Nothing moves the seasons here like the wind. And today things were moving.

So was she. I looked down and looked up, that’s all it took, and she’d put that gap in between us. My lovely wife is up there, powering her way through some ridiculous gear. If you peer into the picture you can just make her out, small dots in the middle-distance. Sometimes you can’t blink and she’ll be gone. When she does that I have to use all the tricks I know to pull my way back up.

I can never tell her all the tricks or she’ll be up the road and it’ll just be me back here with my shadow.
