Extra Alaska

After four days traveling up and down the Kenai peninsula we had a rest day in Anchorage. To hold you over until the next big adventure here are just a few of the things I haven’t published yet. Seward, Alaska — Day One

Adam and Jessica drove us down the peninsula from Anchorage to Seward today. There are a ton of pictures here — because I remain enamored with the snow-capped mountains — so keep scrolling. Forty-five shots in all, broken into sections. Enjoy. There are mountains, birds, fish and more.

Watching the fish, one woman said to her daughter “It is hard to imagine nature could make something as beautiful as that.”

You understand her point, but wish she had the opportunity to get outside just a bit more.

I do believe I ran my foot off

These dogwoods are in the neighborhood park where my wife grew up playing:

This is also the park where we took engagement pictures during a Nor’easter. It is also the park where I come to torture myself whenever we visit her parents. Today I ran far enough that I couldn’t feel my foot.

Yesterday, at her high school track, I ran 440s, which I haven’t done since high school, and which I did poorly back then. But, I told myself, running 440s will build up speed! I do not know what is happening. These are the first two workouts after the most recent triathlon and a day in the car. A handful of 440 sprints and running my way into a numb extremity. I am counting the days until our next race, which is in July. And that will come with only a few weeks of “training” after about two weeks of downtime. What could go wrong?

Here’s something I ran along today. Pretty nice, huh?

I learned something about myself today, as I told my mother-in-law. We were driving from here to there and it occurred to me. I see people running and think Oh, that’s nice. Good for them. I see people cycling and think I wish I was riding right now. I never think Oh I’d love to be running just like they are!

Funny how that works.

It started with a banana

And now, scenes from a morning ride. These horses were unimpressed:

The Yankee is wearing purple for Elise, the beautiful, beautiful young daughter of a friend of hers who died early this year. There was a “virtual race” today, a fundraiser to help pay medical costs.

It was a nice ride. My legs felt good and the little hills we chose didn’t seem much of a challenge for a change. I spent most of the time thinking of the pictures and videos of that little girl’s face. When I found myself in a lull I remembered how much that 3-year-old loved to do burpees. That’ll make you laugh, a tow-headed baby doing toddler burpees with enthusiasm and giggles. You can cover a lot of ground quickly that way. Over the last few miles it all slowed down and I found myself thinking of her mother and father and the empty spot in their home.

So we rode 35 km in the midmorning sun and that was delightful. Guests came to visit and that was wonderful. We went to the wedding of one of The Yankee’s former students and that was lovely. Beautiful bride selfie:

It all made for a full and rich day of emotion. It started with a banana and ended with brunch finger foods and, ultimately, will conclude with my being too tired to eat a proper meal. But I spent the full day with my wonderful wife and we managed to cram a lot of a day into the waking hours. It was a good trade, even if the horses weren’t impressed.

I told you …

… This tree never disappoints.

I just happened to walk outside the office this morning as the sun hit it just right. The little errand I was running was minor, in the scheme of things, but it worked out nicely, don’t you agree?

Had a five mile run this evening. I find it interesting how this is sometimes easier than others. I am bemused when I am not sure which is which.

I do not know what is happening.
