Welcome to a lovely springtime weekend

It takes forever to get here, but for the late start and short term of it, the spring isn’t too bad at all. Here are a few quick flowering trees that prove the point:

Each of the last two years, this has been the weekend where we could really say, with resignation and weariness and confidence, that this was when spring had arrived. This is also the weekend of the big bike races. The women’s Little 500 was today. Here’s some of the pageantry:

And the repeat champions:

One of The Yankee’s students was on that team. I had students interview them the year before. They work hard, they all do, it’s a big race and the students that take part treat it like a big deal year-round. It’s a big part of the tradition on campus. They race hard and fast and put on a great show.

Tomorrow, the men will take their turns around the track.

Enjoy the weekend, and some TV shows

I don’t think I’ve shared any of the student shows this week. So here are a bunch of the things they’ve produced in the last few days.

Here’s Not Too Late, which is the comedy/skit kinda show:

Here’s the sports talk show:

Hoosier News Source:

And the sports highlights show:

And here’s another episode of the sports talk show. They discussed the hockey playoffs, and so they got the sports director on.

There’s another show or two out there, still being edited. But that’s not too bad for a week, I should think. I hope yours was as productive as theirs, and that your weekend is even better!

Still conferencing in Nashville

Yesterday mass comm, today student work and poli comm. That’s the way of things, and so today I presented student work from The Media School, and from the programs at Middle Tennessee State and East Tennessee State University at the SSCA digital showcase.

And then we took a selfie:

Also, I responded to the top student papers in the political communication division. One of them was an analysis of the 2016 RNC speech. Another looked at the charisma in presidential campaign speeches. (It looked at the texts alone, which seemed a limited choice.) The third looked at the great Shirley Chisholm. These were graduate students and so you want to give them good feedback. I hope I did that.

And tonight I finally got a piece of Prince’s hot chicken. We went to a place that sold it as a part of their own menu. And the restaurant gave me one piece with my chicken and waffles. It was hot. And tasty!

(It’s the one on the right.) Now, it might not be the hottest. And I’m a spice wimp, but it was hot. And good. By the time I finished that piece I … I wasn’t used to it, but I’d come to terms with it, I guess. One of our friends said to me “Kenny, you’re glistening.”

At that precise moment I had started wondering whether I was perspiring or my eyes were watering.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was hard to tell.

A sign we found in a restaurant at breakfast:

And now I want some more Prince’s hot chicken. Or barbecue.

I actually talked about basketball for a moment here

There is a basketball tournament and Indiana is in the finals. We have friends from Virginia Tech, the team who will tomorrow being playing the role of the villains. Which, of course, they are not. In point of fact, the Hokies are kind of the underdog here. Both teams started the year slow, and both teams figured it all out at the right time during the season. But, because of seeding, the final WNIT game will be played at Indiana. And Assembly Hall has been getting bigger and bigger crowds as they work their way through this tournament. It’s possible that none of the women for either team have every played in front of a crowd the size they’ll see tomorrow. And they’re all going to be wearing crimson and cream.

So Virginia Tech, really, they’re not the favorite in this game. We have friends from there, so …

Also, Justin and I did a fun show for today. It’s about that guy that is trying to launch himself into space with a homemade rocket. Or, at least he wants you to think that’s what he’s doing. Who can really say?

From The Media Is Changing Department

That department is going to be renamed, something that crystalizes its focus, and the nature of things. What about … The Office Of By Now Thoroughly Unnecessary Updates That Media Is Obviously Changing … The acronym is dreadful, but the name has a certain ring to it.

Studio time

I spent a few minutes in the television studio today with an IDS movie reviewer.

She sits down and does these right after watching the movie. It’s an interesting process. Line, pickup, line, pickup, and then she just jams them all together to get her finished product:

She’s doing that on a DSLR with video capabilities. The studio is a backdrop, a fancy enough setting. But we’re of course producing traditional television productions as well. Here’s a talk show some of the students produced a few days ago. I think so, anyway.

The days tend to run together if you bounce back and forth between the control room and the studio too much. I think it has to do with the darkness in both rooms.
