A weekend collection of things

For our anniversary dinner we had reservations at Warehouse Bistro. This was my dinner:

WarehouseBistro

We go there maybe twice a year. I’ve noticed that the vegetable of the day is always that giant head of broccoli. Not that I’m complaining.

I mention it here because, for some reason, I always mention the food at the anniversary dinner. It is tasty.

We rode our bikes to the pool yesterday. That was six miles just to avoid parking, really. The swim was the point. I swam 1,500 yards and didn’t feel terribly bad about it.

One of our friends was working as a lifeguard and he offered a critique of my technique. He did not understand that my style is carefully designed to not use my legs, at all, in advance of the bike and run to follow.

He wasn’t the only person to offer criticism. A police officer thought enough of me to turn his loud speaker on and talk to me. Twice. He was well intentioned, but in error. Unfortunately we did not have the opportunity to discuss the state law together.

Today we did a regular route which puts in about 18 miles. It is one of my favorite rides, based on the performance. I always seem to do well on that particular set of roads. Indeed, today, on one hill I actually gained five miles per hour.

My speed and power might have continued to improve, but I ran out of ascent.

I do not know what is happening.

Soccer, which we haven’t talked about at all here yet. I listened to the Ghana game as I drove home on Monday. The Yankee, who is awesome, found an app with which to stream the game. But it was my turn to drive and so I would still a very brief glance here or there, not nearly enough to get a real sense of the game, which it sounded like Ghana gave away in more ways than one.

I got to watch a few games on the cruise and, of course, I’ve been watching this week. With Portugal tomorrow, I’m busy watching the hype videos.

This one doesn’t even show any game footage:

This one features the second goal from the Ghana game:

And here’s a slightly older one that highlights the American Outlaws, who should really be a cultural institution unto themselves:

I expect a lot more of these as the U.S. performance continues in the World Cup.

Things to read … because you can always expect more to read.

This is a great, and long read. But it is worth reading to the end this story of a new firefighter’s first blaze. Baptism by fire:

IT WAS QUICKLY DARK. Black smoke pervaded the apartment. He couldn’t see. Inside an apartment on fire, you are robbed of key senses. He had to pick his way with those gardenerlike gloves.

Noise was absent. No cries for help.

In his bunker gear, Firefighter Sullivan didn’t sense the heat.

You’ll love the ending.

Something shorter:

Back in the US

We are back, having made landfall in New Jersey this morning.

NYC skyline

After a week unplugged I had 201 emails, 15 percent of which required my attention. Why did I receive the rest of them?

Pizza at Colony with friends tonight. I must have eaten a pie by myself. (Which is great because careful food choices on the ship, 17 miles on a stationary bike, 14 miles running and a half-mile swimming meant I didn’t gain any weight during the cruise.)

We caught up on the last two episodes of Game of Thrones. (SPOILER: Can you believe that one that that one character did!?!?!) I watched a few other things and read email and tried to catch up on news. I’ll be close to up to speed tomorrow, I’m sure.

We’ll be on the road home. Some trip we’ve had, huh?

The people that keep us fed

Ran 10K this morning. Spent most of the rest of the day reading and relaxing at sea. Those are two great sentences.

Our cruise is winding down. (A sad sentence, indeed.) I would be remiss without mentioning our waiter and assistant waiter.

Peggie is from Nicaragua:

Bermuda

Alvaro is from Peru:

Bermuda

No request was too strange, no favor done with sarcasm or exasperation.

Wednesday night I asked Alvaro if he could find some sour cream. “This is stupid, but just ask and if it requires any more searching than that, don’t think another thing of it.”

A few minutes later he brought back a great big dish of the stuff. We stored it in our stateroom’s mini-fridge and applied it to light sunburns. It really works. Tell everybody. I told Alvaro the next night and he was surprised.

And then we all went out for baked potatoes.

OK, that very last part isn’t true, but this part is: when you cruise with Celebrity, you get great service.

We’re cruising

The Manhattan skyline, as seen from Bayonne, New Jersey. They call it Cape Liberty now, because everyone smirks at Bayonne. As if a name change could change what you saw on the way in. Either way, the views are nice, the weather is warm, the sun is out.

NYC

We had breakfast at the in-laws’ favorite diner. We loaded the car, unloaded the car and reloaded the car correctly. We did not photograph how we stacked all of the luggage. We should have.

We drove to New Jersey, unloaded the car, gave the luggage to the union guys and then worked our way through the process of getting on board. We were early enough that this went smoothly. The clerk who processed me in remarked on how young I looked in my passport photo.

That was only eight years ago. Have I aged that much? Excuse me while I undergo several new skin treatments.

We got to our room, took the traditional OJ toast and are waiting on our luggage and to get underway.

OJ

So things will be sparse for the next week. A photo here, a video there. We’ll get back up to speed soon after.

Until then, I’ll have a relaxing time for you.

Two videos that have nothing to do with one another

Don’t read it, just watch:

Do you like arts and crafts? Well, when I saw this on Tumblr I thought of you!

Finally, we’re going to get see Jozy Altidore run:

Walked a mile. Ran two stadiums. Ran two miles. Let’s call this a rest day. Especially after the 5.36 miles I ran yesterday.

And there will be a whole lot of running next week …

I do not know what is happening.
