Sifting through extra photos

I s tarted running again yesterday. Got in a nice and even four-miler. Start back swimming this week, too, I think. That must be why I’m thinking about a second dinner late in the evening as I listen to the journalists in the next room put their paper to bed for the week.

Since a second dinner would just look tacky, I’ll settle on this sticker that I saw yesterday. I suppose its a necessary thing. The jig is up for three-foot-tall Frankensteins looking to knock off a Whataburger:

Whataburger

I want to go dressed as every other burger place I can think of, just to make the statement that they are inferior to Whataburger, which is open 24 hours a day, the closest one being only about 20 minutes away.

But, no. Stay strong. Stay hungry.

Here’s a quick shot I took this weekend:

Hay

For as long as I can remember I’ve been enamored with the idea of finding a field with nothing on the horizon and one terrific, full tree in the foreground. It would just be field and sky and my tree, straight out of a basic artistic composition class. I haven’t found it yet. Every now and again the singular hay bale is a reasonable stand in.

One last extra thing. This house looks old. I think it is the humble brick line and the classic porch and the nice architecture.

House

It is a 21st century home. Clever design, no?

Back to the laps

After work, I hit the gym. Meanwhile, the football team was hard at practice:

You see that view from the old fieldhouse, between the locker room and the pool.

You know, you think you’re doing something and then you realize: those guys were out there before you started, and they’re still out there when you’re done. But, hey, I swam 2,000 yards and ran two miles.

At the pool there’s a coach. He’s not my coach. He wouldn’t take me on as a client if I asked, I’m sure. I told him about my race and my slow recovery. Something like 10 days later and I’m still complaining about it. He wasn’t particularly surprised. More carbs, he said. Meanwhile, I’ve decided if I don’t feel better this week I’m just going to will myself into feeling better.

But, hey, I did get a two mile jog in, so there’s that.

At Publix, ’tis the season:

A friend told me about making French toast with sweet rolls. He says it can change your world view. Now I can’t see these things without thinking about it.

One day, we’ll give it a shot.

In praise of Cheez-Its

I don’t eat these things. You could put boxes of them in our cabinets and I’d move them all out of the way on the off chance that there’s something else behind them that I’d actually like to enjoy.

Four miles into my run this weekend, some 61 miles into my day, I had a handful at an aid station.

crackers

And they were easily the most delicious things I’ve ever put in my mouth.

We walked a few miles yesterday, just to move around. I remain a little stiff, but in good shape. Just completely tired. This will last another day or two. But I was thinking about those Cheez-Its when I saw that box in the cabinet this morning.

You eat a light, nutritious breakfast before a race if you can. You eat what you’re accustomed to, really. I had some toast and fruit and jelly and honey. You don’t have anything in the swim, obviously. Somewhere along the way in your training you realize that really the entire experience is about fuel and water. So you have to regularly keep yourself in good shape with both. So you drink a lot of water on the bike and you start eating there, too. There were two or three water stops on the cycling loop and I started eating Shot Bloks and various energy gels. I do those about every 45 minutes, meaning I had … quite a few. (Because I’m slow. Have I mentioned that?)

That goes on through the 56 mile ride and throughout the half marathon, as well. So by mile four I was tired of lukewarm water and gels and bloks. At the little tent at the four mile mark they had a giant bowl of Cheez-Its. Just for variety at that point, because I’m hours into this by then, I had the best cracker snack ever.

Reminded me of the Eddie Murphy bit: If you’re starving and someone throws you a cracker you’ll be like “That’s the best cracker I ever ate in my life! That ain’t no regular cracker was it? What was that a Saltine? That was delicious. That wasn’t no Saltine, that was a Ritz! That wasn’t a Ritz?”

Everything tastes like that after a big workout, though.

News engagement day

Just another beautiful day on campus. This is the view from one of the plazas on the quad, in front of Cumberland Law and beside the Davis Library.

campus

The occasion was something called News Engagement Day. Students were out interviewing passersby and giving them a current events quiz. I strolled out to give moral support and took the quiz. (I passed! No pressure in getting that result.)

The students also produced some nice videos.

This story starts “When you’re in your 80s, rarely do you embark on a new profession.” But, really, you’re going to click this link to see the video. It is a wonderful four minutes.

This one will strike a different chord, Jason Gunter faces last shot at redemption in Ironman. Just your standard “double amputee looking to finish the race that thwarted him six years ago” story.

Every day since collapsing about four miles from the finish line Oct. 10, 2009, at the Ironman World Championship, the Fort Myers double amputee and attorney has plotted and prepared for redemption.

For the first five years, the unlikeliest of Ironmen would log onto the 140.6-mile race’s website in early April. He would survey the five winners of the triathlon’s physically-challenged lottery, of which there were 25 to 30 entrants. He would not see his name.

[…]

Gunter, 50, said this will be his second and last attempt to conquer Kona, the world’s most famous triathlon.

(Update: Did he do it? Yes he did.)

Your regular old Tuesday

Maybe you’ve heard that the governor and his wife are going through a divorce. And the two sides have asked for, and the judge had sealed, the paperwork. This is unusual in Alabama, and not especially a good thing considering the details. Bob Sims, who is the editor of The Anniston Star, discusses those details, right here:

It was a peculiar set of now-remedied circumstances.

Newspaper tonight, 3,000 yard swim and a 3.1 mile run, too. And in between, these scary things:

starwars

Just in time for you to not buy them for Halloween. The Star Wars licensing people are getting a little loose with their standards. The Yoda doesn’t even stand up on its own.

starwars

It is going to be a long slog through merchandise until the movie is released in December, isn’t it?
