Well that happened in a hurry

I say this at least once a year, but maples are quitters:

And this is way too early for the first leaf to have turned and let go of the branch to find its way to the ground. I found it on the sidewalk outside of our building on campus this morning. I’m noting the date and time, should anything come of it.

Found this repop poster on the wall at lunch today. While I find it too early for the leaf turn, this is right on time.

Even if the poster is wrong — Game One was at Yankee Stadium — it is eerily right on time. Game One of the 1932 World Series was on September 28th. This happened 84 years and one day ago.

The Yankees won. Some 41,000 fans saw the Yankees take the lead with a Lou Gehrig, and then they really poured it on in the final three frames. Red Ruffing pitched a complete game, striking out 10 Cubs.

So that’s timing, for you.

On the 29th, in Game Two, the Yankees won 5-2 and Hall of Famer Lefty Gomez got the second win of the Series. That game took one hour and 46 minutes to complete, and is not the shortest on record. (That’d be an 85 minute contest in 1908.) Babe Ruth saw his last Yankee Stadium World Series game. Ruth’s supposed called shot took place in the third game, in Chicago.

Through all of this, the Cubs wouldn’t hold a lead for more than a half-inning until Game Four, but even that couldn’t stand up. They got swept. But look at the Cubbies now, right?

Remember this

If ever you should feel homesick, remember this: look around.

Before long, you’ll find something that is familiar and right. Take this water valve. I saw this walking back to the office from lunch today:

Albertville, the “Fire Hydrant Capital of the World” is just 100 miles northeast of where I grew up. (I remember the first time I saw that slogan on a sign outside of Albertville. Now I’m going to smile about it every time I pass by that Mueller.

Also, I mentioned I found Milo’s Tea, right? That’s brewed in the town where I lived as a kid. Same water supply.

You just have to seek it out.

As seen on my bicycle

The barn on my bike ride home from the office:

barn

This is on a bike path. The route is just under five miles, much of it on quiet neighborhood roads. Near the end I can enjoy a stretch of a seven-tenths of a mile stretch on this path with only the odd walker or occasional jogger. On one end is a round about, on another is a playground with a punchy little climb up to another playground and park and then the easy downhill home. In between is that barn, sitting there like a forgotten toy, out of place tucked into the suburban carpet.

Indoor peektures

My second in-the-building bike sighting:

bike

I imagine this won’t last long. I’m going to ride my bike to campus, but I will leave it in my office. At least until the indoor bike storage area is complete. (We have one of those. Pretty fancy, no?)

We’re one day closer to being in the television studio today. Pretty exciting stuff. We should be in there in another week or two. Here’s the tally light on camera two:

There are four robotic cameras in the studio. You can control them all from a joystick and a touchscreen in the control room. Very fancy.

Snap! Ting, ting tong, ting

On today’s ride I broke a spoke. It wasn’t a big deal, everything worked out after I wrestled it away from the rest of the machinery. Here it is at home, after I eased my way home:

Mass and wear are the most likely culprits. My mass wore it out. So I’ll get that fixed tomorrow. Before all of that, according to my app, I hit 45.6 miles per hour. I assure you that was going downhill, so score one more for mass.
