Home at last

We are back. Everything is just as we left it. Happy to see our things. Nice to wake up in my own bed. It was a terrific trip, a wonderful adventure, and we are pleased to be back.

Woke the cycling computer up today.

Just a brief ride. I haven’t been on my bike since April, I’m sad to say. But I’ve been busy. So we took a quick loop around the time trial route and over a few little hills, reminding my bike who I was.

And my bike said, “Oh. Slower than usual, huh?”

Yes. But it was nice to feel the handlebars again and sweat over the headset and remember I still struggle on climbs.

One of the things about travel is that, if you are gone for long enough you begin to make a list of things you miss about home. I missed pavement, as opposed to cobbles. I missed free refills on ice water. I missed not having to pay to visit a restroom.

I missed barbecue:

So we’re making up for that tonight.

On the road again

I love little things like this. I never notice them until some unusual moment, like standing on the top stair, catching my breath while loading luggage.

What news, what happiness has come through the pressing of that doorbell over the years? How many times has it chimed inside? How many of the people who stood there and pressed that button where trying to sell something?

We’re heading home. The good news is that the black cat is traveling with us:

The bad news is that Allie has to spend the best part of a day in the car:

She’s an excellent passenger, though. Probably better than we are.

There are only so many rounds of “I Spy” you can play in the mountains.

“Something green!”

And we learned we’re both pretty bad at 20 questions. We couldn’t especially remember the rules and had a hard time keeping count, which sort of blunts the purpose of the game.

But we are home at last. Our doorbell button looks undisturbed.

Brandom-burg pic

(Extra material from our trip to Germany.)

I knew there were selfies from the Brandenburg Gate. I just stumbled on them, and here’s one now.

Make fun of the selfie stick if you like, but it helped us compose some nice pictures during the trip.

There probably will be plenty of extra shots from the trip for a while. See them again for the first time!

My introduction to Carvel

Thomas Carvel was a Greek immigrant. The story goes he wanted to make his customers smile and bought an ice cream truck. Somehow a flat tire figures into the legend because he built his first ice cream store where the truck broke down.

Now, 81 years and countless stores later, here I am, learning about clown cakes.

Seems that Wednesdays are also buy one sundae get another one at a pl;easing consumer price point. So that’s what we did.

Good promotion. There was a line out of the door at one point while we were there. But no one was buying clown cakes.

Evening view

Dinner with friends tonight.

That’s not a bad view.
