Scenes from a weekend of riding

We got in about 60 miles on the bikes this weekend. We went over to Columbus on Saturday, a beautiful, warm day, to ride the bulk of it. Here is the Riverwalk:

You have to time this right so you can either avoid, or run into, the maximum amount of pedestrians. Your windows are narrow over there. But look at that sky!

I thought I would take a selfie. And I did, but this one turned out even cooler:

I guess I pressed the shutter button before the sensor compensated for the light. That white background is not Photoshopped, that’s just the way it turned out.

My Specialized and the Chattahoochee:

Really we go over to Columbus to ride for the late breakfast after. Can we talk food for a second? Let’s talk food for a second. As a baby, I gave up the bottle relatively quickly. And — being raised in the deep, deep, deeeeep South — I was probably weened on biscuits and gravy. So understand: I have a frame of reference here. Plucked Up Chicken & Biscuits has the best gravy biscuit I’ve ever tasted:

And I’m from the South, of course, so I know which I speak here. Also, someone thought it’d be a good idea to lightly batter some tender chicken and then put it in a spicy pineapple marmalade. This was a good idea:

Go have some. Seriously. It’ll change your day.

Today’s roses at home:

They just bloom and bloom and require nothing of us. Pretty incredible.

Those are Virginias, not Valencias

Took a carload, and I do mean a car full, of stuff to Goodwill today. A nice lady came out with two giant bins and helped me pull stuff out of the car and then into their storefront. She told me stories of things she has found in the donations they receive. You wouldn’t want to believe them, really. But then she also noticed a pair of cufflinks that she was pretty sure I didn’t want to donate. And she was correct.

She thanked me and told me to bring the rest — because there’s more to donate — and then gave me the tax forms that I tried to avoid and then literature:

That trip thinned out two closets and some stuff from the attic and garage.

Later there was baseball, which has become an event more about people and friends than the game itself. And, also, peanuts:

You don’t see as many three-kernel peanuts as you used to, you think. But then you remember, oh that’s about varieties. And when you get the three-kernel prize out of a giant bag of Virginia peanuts. Or maybe runners. Hard to tell.

Just some pics

We went over to O-town for dinner on Saturday night. I took a picture of the railroad tracks and the overpass and the sunset. It seemed emblematic of something or other:

Those are not planets or UFOs, but simple light reflections in the phone’s lens.

We had a steak and okra last night. The Yankee makes good okra, especially since she, ya know, ain’t from around these parts:

Allie, The Black Cat is hanging out on the guest bed today. It has nothing to do with that big pool of sun she’s in:

I like to think of that look as “You are disturbing me, but I won’t make direct eye contact to let you know it.”

I’m now pricing old Star Wars toys

Went out for lunch today:

We did not eat the Rhode Island Red. He lives at the restaurant, though, which is kind of weird, I’ll grant you. The front is a nursery and out the back is a fresh fruits and vegetables store. Attached to that is the restaurant and we get veggie crepe wraps and stuffed squash there. Stuffed squash is good stuff.

The service is spotty. It is staffed by a bunch of students and sometimes they’re great but other times you just get the cute “Oops” smile. Not much you can do but stare at that and think I hope that takes you far in life.

And sometimes you think you didn’t want a veggie crepe, but maybe some fried chicken sounds nice …

We did some shopping today. We’re doing one of the Santa games for the holidays with my family this year. It is the polite Santa game, because it is a family environment and there are kids and there’s a price limit and you can steal presents and so on.

We have to find two things under $10. It took some doing, but we did it. (And some of those people read this, so I’m not spoiling that again this year.)

We saw some other cool stuff though. And I’m going to show some of those things to you. And when you see these things, remember how smart George Lucas was about the original Star Wars. The movie was the movie, but the vision was in the merchandising. He got sweet deals because no one back then believed that toys and shirts would be a revenue stream. That was Lucas’ real genius.

Now, with Lucas having sold to Disney for a song, and the Mouseketeers putting their muscle into merchandising, they’ve proven George Lucas an absolute piker.

We didn’t buy any of those things. I object on philosophical grounds. Darth Vader is a feared and despised bad guy throughout the galaxy. He is not the face that should be toasting your bread.

We did, however, pick up a little present for ourselves. Cool little nightlight:

And two presents for under $10 for the family Christmas game. Still no fried chicken, though.

Happy Monday

And how was your weekend? Uneventful here, but I was ready for uneventful. Wrapping up the term and long hours seem to do that to me. We did get in a nice run, enjoyed the weather, saw some leaves:

Look at these go, this is about two miles into a four-mile jog:

Saturday night, we counted our good fortune and enjoyed a delicious steak fresh off the grill:

Breakfast this morning.

That’s it for today. Come back soon for more show and tell.
