Ware's neighbor on College Street, was and remains J&M Bookstore.

George Johnston and Paul Malone got into the college book business in 1953. They'd later buy their competitor, Burton's Bookstore, which dated back to the 1880s and so J&M holds onto a tenuous claim as the oldest college bookstore in Auburn.

Johnstone bought out Malone and the company was passed down to his sons, who still run the business today from two locations, including this, their original store on College Street.

So entrenched is the business, so ideal their location, one wonders why they even bother to advertise. And of course they'll buy back your books, not nearly for what you'd like, but they'll take them off your hands.

Disgruntled as students might be by that particular aspect of the business model, there's no getting around that the Johnston boys continue to be a vital cog in the local economy.

Of Burton's Bookstore, here's their 1952 Glomerata ad and their 1953 Glomerata ad. J&M, meanwhile, got in the business originally by buying the Hawkins Book Company.

Here's a color photo of the J&M from earlier in the 1976 book. Hasn't changed too much in the years since.
