Just down the street was one of the competitors. Times haven't changed so much that only one bookstore would do. Oh no. While there are four or five lurking around waiting for students to produce a credit card today, there were an equaly number in my grandparents day.

How did students pay for books back then anyway? Ah yes, the Auburn Credit Company, located conveniently upstairs.

Make no mistake: they were friendly. Until you missed a payment on the credit line, then they'd import some guy named Bruiser from the movies -- and pow! -- you're limping to class.

Hawkins was near the location of the present day J&M Bookstore on College Street. J&M bought out Hawkins in the 1950s, ending a seven-decade era in the college book business.
