Underwood was a hugely successful typewriter company, a market leader in the first half of the 20th century. During the war Underwood made rifles. The Underwood name was on office desks through the 1980s, when typewriters themselves began their long fade away.

This is about the point where you start to notice how many of the occupations that evolved or changed or disappeared about right about the time this book's readers were winding down their careers.
