I read two descriptions about what these machines did. I have no idea what they did.

They were state-of-the-art, or at least very near it, when this book was published. And then the Army used them for computing and code encryption during the war. By the 1950s IBM was putting their first versions of core memory in these guys.

I wonder what the model here was required to do with the cards after the machine spat them out.
