The subhead says more than 1,000 school systems were using "the 21-inch picture tube" as a teaching aid.

The story's lead: "When our 37 million public-school children returned to their classes this autumn they were welcomed by 135,000 too few teachers into 130,000 too few classrooms. In thousands of high schools there were no physics, chemistry, music, art or language courses. One out of every 14 teachers had a substandard certification."

I grew up at the end of this technological generation. They could not predict in-school studios, whatever distance programs kids enjoy/suffer today. The promise of classroom television was, ultimately, about giving the substitute teacher something to distract children with when there was no lesson plan they could convey.
