John Glenn orbits the Earth.

The main art is an artist's view of the cockpit as Glenn circles the earth three times upright and backwards. The map at the bottom shows Glenn's path.

The right side of the February 20, 1962 front page tells the tale of Glenn's orbit, taking over partial manual control when something went wrong in his "space chariot" and his safe return.

There's a secondary story of a network following the flight, his hometown celebrating and his wife watching closely from their home.

Back on Earth, the Red Mountain Expressway construction would soon begin as road crews cut through the mountain to gain an easier reach to the suburbs. Total project cost: estimated at $12 million.

Elsewhere, President Kennedy wanted Congress to raise the pay for federal workers and a murder trial in a rural town north of Birmingham continued. There was some question about the use of evidence.

This was the late final, owing to Glenn's ride. The weather is in the skybox and the tease inside is on the left margin. The paper still costs five cents.

There's a lengthy column that has a comic illustration and jumps inside the paper on treating children as individuals. Apparently there was a problem with this before the 60s.
