Delegates say Underwood; Klan riots.

This all has to do with a political convention, specifically the Democrats meeting in New York City. Most of the page is given to the convention, including candidate coverage, the "evils of the G.O.P. regime," platform issues and the usual rhetoric that comes from a political convention.

Underwood is actually Senator Oscar Wilder Underwood of Alabama. He was running for president and all this name mentioning on June 25th, 1924 by delegates had the Klan was upset because Underwood had a firm stance against the group. Underwood's chief opponent for the nomination was Wiliam MaAdoo, who'd served as a U.S. Senator and Treasury secretary. Ultimately the bid went to John W. Davis, who lost to incumbent President Calvin Coolidge.

In other news there was a heat wave on, hitting 90 before noon with no end in sight. A Chicago preacher led a gambling raid that landed four arrests while seizing $10,000.

To the far left there's coverage of The Birmingham News' picnic at East Lake.

"Children, children, thousands of them, young, old, little, big, fat, skinny, rich and poor all shined up in their happiest smiles and best holiday dispositions ready for the greatest time of the whole year..."

Now I'm sure that was wonderful fun, but greatest time of the year? Thinking a little highly of a picnic there.
