Dr. William V. Muse was president of Auburn University during that time. He served for nine years.

The caption reads that "Muse was frequently involved in student activities." This could have been faint praise, given the mood and perceptions of the time.

Muse served in an unusual period of Auburn history, trustees exerted far too much power and it is difficult to gauge against that. He left for East Carolina University. Citing health reasons, he stepped down there after only two years, but there were murmurings of behind-the-scenes problems.

He wrote an autobiography.
