If I wasn't spending too much time at the paper I was spending too much time at the radio station. They're doing a remote for WEGL.

The transmitter has 3,000 watts of directional power sitting atop Haley Center. If the weather was just right you could hear the signal on the outskirts of Montgomery, Ala. or Columbus, Ga. Other days you couldn't hear the station as you looked at the transmitter.

The place is a direct descendant of the oldest station in Alabama. In fact, the original transmitter, which was given to the university by Alabama Power, is still in operation in Birmingham. Soon after college I found myself broadcasting on that stick as well. So I'm all over the history of broadcasting in this part of the world, albeit 70 years late.

I started doing sports and news, and then co-hosted the sports talk show. My senior year(s) I helped create, produce and co-hosted a morning talk show, which we were very proud of, even when it flirted with awful. One of the co-hosts from that show runs her own magazine now. Another is a restaurant boss. Another member of the show has his own morning gig elsewhere now. None of us were as cool as these people, but that's not bad for a bunch of people purely interested in the nonsensical.
