This is that computer bullpen. We had a common bullpen with desks and phones, one for each of the paper's four sections. There was a great dark room in one corner and beyond the wall the mysteries of the advertising department took place. Between the bullpen resided the computer room, the editor's office and the media adviser's office.

We could all be found fighting for space on one of the computers just before deadline. A lot of writing was down in a computer lab or -- for the best equipped -- at home and then Emailed to section editors. I spent many Tuesday nights in this room trying, and often failing, to remember the difference between affect and effect.

It was here that I wrote about agriculture, politics, bomb threats and car crashes. I spent many Tuesday nights, and early Wednesday mornings, pecking away at those keyboards, praying the network held during the crucial moments of file transfer. Not everything was as sturdy as it feels these days.

Everyone else had to work here too, like Wade, who's filing a column in this shot.

Incidentally it was this guy, a very nice guy, that taught me of the magic of FTP, the basics of HTML and told me to learn the rest over trial and error. I spent a summer doing just that, and have spent the next decade trying to make pages in a minimal amount of code.
