This is the first picture in the UPC section. The University Program Council, if you could only go from the photographs here, existed to serve the occasional piece of food.
But these were the folks that brought in the musical acts, comedians, weekly free movies and random odd outdoor activities throughout the year. They always got a bad rap in the "can't please everyone" vein but it was hardly deserved.
In 1995 they booked astronaut and Auburn man Ken Mattingly (on the heels of the Apollo 13 movie), Carrot Top, the Allman Brothers Band and Edwin McCain. In the spring there were bike races, authors, Miss America, the Royal Hanneford Circus, a jazz festival and more.
The weekly free movies, akin to what's on at your local dollar theater today, were a regular success. We watched movies in old Langdon Hall, the center of a lot of Auburn history where we watched contemporary films and heckled the volunteer workers when they missed a reel change. It was all great fun, smuggling in food, trying to identify the smells and -- most importantly -- not spending money.
Those name tags? I have a similar one.
