War Eagle Motorsports was a practical outlet for engineering students. And people that liked mud.

There was a formula car group and the mini-baja team, both built their racers from the ground up. Baja racing had been restarted at Auburn in 1991. The team began in 1977, but closed up shop in the mid 1980s. This was the rookie campaign for the formula team -- and there are no photos here.

The competition is as much about the engineering as the racing. The baja car, for example, was judged on acceleration, speed, breaking, suspension, flotation and a four-hour endurance race. The formula crew designed and built a prototype car for a few grand. The designing was a judging criteria there, as was a 30-mile endurance race.

Around this same time Auburn was running a nationally dominant solar racing team, but there's no mention of them here.
