Auburn University put these emergency poles around campus. They are tall and brown with white lettering. There are two buttons and a speaker on the poll. One button summons a courtesy campus escort, the other orders the noisy arrival of police to the scene.
At the top there's a blue light which is designed to attract attention both for authorities and witnesses.
These were installed in 1993 and the statement, for a decade, from campus officials was always the same "We wish people would use these more."
Use them for the escort function that is. We'd all just as soon hope there are no emergencies to report.
Fifteen years after their installation the poles still merit attention from The Auburn Plainsman, including a section front story in June of 2008.
