Or a hurricane. In late September of 1995 Hurricane Opal formed in the Gulf of Mexico, grew to a Category 4 storm and then came ashore in florida and Alabama in October.
The impressive tidbit about Opal was that it maintained hurricane status for half a day after landfall. It crossed into Tennessee before meteorologists were able to downgrade the storm. Auburn is only 170 miles or so inland, so we caught a still imposing storm.
It was a Wednesday. I had a noon history class in one of those big auditorium settings in Haley Center. Just a few moments before that class was to begin the University finally closed the campus. The storm was coming, and we knew it might be a bad one, and were amused it took that long to close down.
I discovered this news on the door of the classroom. A girl walked up at the same time, read the note and we were at a loss of what to do. I'd never seen the girl -- it was a class of 350 or so -- but we struck up a conversation and ultimately I asked her out on a lunch date.
I was such a stud. After our snack I returned home to find the windows taped up and a scrawled note in my roommates barely legible handwriting "Where are you!!!???" I called the number he left and discovered we had a friend who had friends who lived in neighboring Opelika and we were going to ride out the storm there ...
