She died 15 years before I walked onto the campus, but one of those people that I would have enjoyed meeting would have been Katherine Cooper Cater, she also has an interested and inviting expression in her photographs.

A part of Auburn for 34 years, she served under three presidents as Dean of Women and Social Director, and later as Dean of Student Life. She's remembered as urging women to finish their education and prepare for careers in an expanding society.

Most of the women's dorms were completed during her tenure, and she's remembered for supporting some hallmark changes at Auburn.

The Glomerata says "women are no longer required to sign in and out of the dormitories and freshmen have the same hours as upperclassmen now. Women students are grateful for Dean Cater's support in these areas."

The old President's Mansion was renamed Cater Hall in her honor. She's sitting on the porch of the building in this photo. Built in 1915 and converted into a social center and post office in 1938, Cater Hall continues with administrative duties today. The Registrar's office, Student Affairs, tutoring and other services are also provided in the beautiful old building.
