Auburn fielded a club team in men's soccer, still does, but the Glomerata pretends to be shocked by this news. In truth the sport had been wildly popular on campus decades before, but that was before football became the monolith.

They played a separate fall and spring season, with fair results, but I think I've found their one strategic mistake: they fielded 10 players for the picture. Soccer is an 11-man sport.

There's no way to be sure where this is, but we can be positive that this isn't where they would play their games today.

While there's still no men's varsity soccer team, a women's varsity program began as I started at Auburn. They quickly rose through the ranks to a respectable national level. That's in the 1990s, but speaking of developing women's sports ...
