The new coach for Auburn would be Doug Barfield.
He was already on the staff and begin growing into the job over the course of the 1976 season. An Alabama native, he's largely thought of these days as a transition between two legendary coaching heros, Shug Jordan and Pat Dye.
Barfield would be the head coach for five years, compiling an overall 29-25-1 record. His 1979 team would place 16th in the AP poll, and these days his numbers would have been good for three bowl appearances, but he never led the Tigers to post-season play.
Most importantly, he would never beat Alabama.
After stepping down he coached several high school teams around the state.
