College Street, circa 1976. I love that this street hasn't changed. This portion of it at least.
Moving from the foreground you see the J&M bookstore. Johnstone and Malone have been there forever, and remain in that location. From my 1930s Glomeratas I've determined that another bookstore was once on that spot.
Beside J&M is a local jewelry, which is still in business. And down from that is the First Bank of Auburn. The bank still exists, but not under that name. Not sure, yet, which name was being used in 1976.
The red lights in the background mark the intersection of College and Magnolia. This is, of course, the corner where city and University meet, and the site of historic Toomer's Corner.
I said that this portion of the street hasn't changed, but beyond those red lights a Rumpelstiltskin from 1976 waking up today wouldn't recognize any of the businesses after Toomer's Drugs, which you can just see in those picture. This is a sad piece of nostalgia, but change is inevitable.
Incidentally, the guy that's chopped off in that lower inset photograph is sitting on the pedestrian crossing lights to take a picture of ... something.
