"Some other institutions need to give descriptive names to their bands in order to praise them. The quality of the music, the precision of its drills, and the fine image that it portrays have made it unnecessary for us to say more than, "This is the Auburn University Band." -Former Auburn President, Dr. Harry Philpott
He was correct, too. In 2004 the band received the nation's highest award for bands, the Sudler Trophy.
In 1898, the book notes, there 16 members in the marching band.
In 1975 there were 250.
Today there are more than 375 members.
Unless I'm mistaken these formations are being performed at Legion Field, in Birmingham.
Unrelated: We've blamed the 1970s for these brown pages, right?
