There was once a bonfire, they called it Burn the Bulldogs. For whatever reason they don't do this anymore. Safety was probably the concern, but I'm not sure when this fell out of favor.

The students made floats, marched them through the streets and they were ultimately tossed on the bonfire. For warmth probably. This is always the next to last game of the year and it can be chilly.

Also, silhouette don't work well in black and white photography.
