I include the majorettes here because -- recalling the purpose of this project to highlight my family's period had they attended Auburn -- it is likely that my mother would have been in this photograph.

She was a baton twirler and was fond of telling stories of her awesomeness. Whenever there's a young girl of the baton twirling age around my mother would take the stick away and amaze and awe the kid that this older woman could do something so indisputably cool.

Kids are easy to amaze, and we enjoy that, I think, even more as we get older.

My mother tells the story of how she wanted to twirl a flaming baton in high school. She'd figured out some way to test it with a non-burning stick to make sure she could twirl it without inflicting second-degree burns. She felt confident, but her parents said no.

That would have been a site.
