I presume this is one of the many decorative fish ponds on the campus.
The informal tradition during my day was a walk through the affectionately named malaria pond on your graduation day. Apparently they've served many rolls through the course of history.
Few people remember it today, but the bachelor party was originally the last chance for the groom-to-be to be steered away from his impending nuptials. Guys would take them out, show the groom what he would miss and then throw him manfully -- there was much grunting and swearing -- into a nearby body of water, so as to shock him to his senses.
Some things change all over.
