Sigma Pi Epsilon chose to show off their contribution to the Wreck Tech parade.
They are in pajamas because this parade, leading to the pep rally before the Georgia Tech game, was always a pajama party.
The legend goes that in 1896, the first time Georgia Tech game to Auburn for a game, Auburn students greased the railroad tracks so their train couldn't stop at the station. The engineer finally got the train stopped, but the Tech players had to walk back to Auburn for the game. After a five mile hike Tech was beaten badly and vowed never to play Auburn again if that's how they'd be treated.
Rough spots were smoothed over, anger cooled and tensions were eased. But that didn't stop the creation of this parade.
Auburn doesn't play Georgia Tech regularly anymore -- at the time they were conference rivals -- but the parade is recreated when they do meet. It seems funny to anyone of my generation to see so much effort put into Tech, the rivalry was replaced with angst toward other programs, but no one else gets a parade.
