Coach "Swede" Umbach's wrestlers had their best year ever.
And that's saying something.
They earned their second consecutive Southeastern Intercollegiate Association tournament championship. Went undefeated on the year and just flat dominated everyone in doing so. They printed the scores here, and V.M.I. and Emory at least made it respectable, each losing by a dozen points.
Umbach's teams had only lost four matches in eight years. In wrestling, before there was Iowa, there was Auburn.
Today wrestling is an open club sport at Auburn. And while these guys were tough, they probably couldn't grapple with the athletes of today. And not just because they are in their 70s, but if you could put them together in their prime.
Of course these 1950s guys look like they could break your arm for saying such a thing, but still.
