This photo of part of the newspaper staff was obviously taken just before the Georgia Tech game.

Not sure why newspaper photos always have to have someone "reading" the paper. After the mad dash to get the thing published we were usually sick of it.

Papers back then were wider, but seven columns was the industry standard, and certainly not as many pages as they run today.

Jack Johnson, the 1953 business manager, resides in Auburn if I'm not mistaken. The lady on the left of this photo is still recognized as an important donor to the University. The internet says the young man that's seated is still with us and still going to football games as well. The rest have more common names and don't seem to be known to the internet.

There's not much in the newspaper photos that I don't recognize. Some 55 years later I was helping to put this same paper together and there wasn't much more technology, a handful of computers that we all fought over, but that is it. It was important, we guessed to learn to put papers together the old fashioned way with razors, glue and tape, but few of the folks that went into newspapers have built a paper in that way since we left college.

There's an ad on that paper for War Eagle Theatre, but we'll come back to that soon. There's also an ad for Chesterfield. Won't see that these days..

The biggest difference, though, is the lack of sarcastic graffiti in these pictures. The place today would be littered with bad art and punchlines.
