Old school radar? Radiation monitors? Super secret computers? It could be any silly thing.

What is straightforward and serious, though, is that Auburn has maintained a top-notch engineering program. I'm confident that, whatever these guys were doing, it was very contemporary at the time.

Still more bonus points if you can explain it to me though.
