Ahh, College Street. This is one of the border roads of the campus proper. The road divides city from campus and runs in front of Samford, Langdon and Smith Halls, also passing in front of the modern library, and Ag Hill. College Street also has a few blocks of business fronts, most notably the historic Toomer's Drugs.
This is the view looking down toward campus, and the two most notable stores in this photograph are Tiger Theater and a Piggly Wiggly, both on the right side. We discussed Tiger Theater a few pages back. The classic film Strangers on a Train was showing this day.
None of these businesses are the same now, except for Toomer's, and it is merely a lemonade, short-order diner and souvenir shop shell of itself at this point. Big business came in and made the old drugstore obsolete, the drugstore side of things shut down when I was at Auburn.
Oddly, Toomer's probably sees more revenue as the state's most historic T-shirt stand than it ever did pushing pharmaceuticals.
