Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
This picture appears in a group which includes photographs with scribbled dates and development time steps in early 1940. If this picture fits in that timeline the people behind the camera were some of the first to see the completed sculpture -- or some of the last to see the work unfinished. It was completed in October of 1941.
The scree is still there. The pine trees have changed a bit in the last 70 years. You can only barely make it out, but there's a crane on Washington's head, and equipment on top of Abraham Lincoln.
