Merl went down to the auditorium regularly and, for the life of him, couldn't figure out why she wanted to take a picture of him now. It could be that shiny piece of glass in his hand, but that was all part of the job.
Can't be too important, after all, look at those trousers. They're wrinkled and worn, he had to sit a while just to get out of the place today. He just wanted to get across the street and have a cup of coffee.
And while the circumstances beyond this photograph, and even its origin, are a mystery, we at least have a nice image of that beautiful sign/light. Some of Merl's friends thought it was too fancy for this little corner of the world, but it stood in place for a long time. When you passed it you were going to an important meeting or a big school play. Important things happened inside, and that means an official looking sign.
Merl would come to approve.
